Gender-based violence legislation is not enough
by Chloe,
South Africa does not lack laws against gender-based violence. The Domestic Violence Act of 1998 lets survivors apply for a protection order, and the Sexual Offences Act of 2007 widened the legal definition of rape and set out how these cases must be handled.
Yet police recorded 42 289 rapes in 2025/26, an average of 116 every day, and research suggests that many rapes never reach the police. A law only protects someone when it is applied: when a police station takes a statement with dignity, when a protection order is served, when a case reaches court and when a shelter has a bed.
Legislation is the starting point. Funding, training and accountability at local level decide whether it works.

GBV: Structural inequalities exacerbate our hidden pandemic of violence against women
by Chloe,
Violence does not fall evenly. It concentrates where women have the least power to leave: where a partner’s income pays the rent, where safe housing is out of reach and where jobs are scarce. Police recorded the murder of 2 695 women, roughly one every three hours (the figure was preliminary).
Many women were confined at home with the person hurting them, while the services they rely on were stretched. The violence was already there. Lockdown made it harder to see and harder to escape.
Ending it means more than punishing offenders. It means jobs, housing, schooling and services that give people real options.

Battling poverty and hunger, Graaff-Reinet community stands up against rape
by Chloe,
Graaff-Reinet sits in the Eastern Cape, the province that recorded South Africa’s highest murder rate in 2025/26, at 59.5 per 100 000 people. A community that is already coping with poverty and hunger and still chooses to stand up against rape deserves our attention.
It shows what Safe Space believes: safety is built locally, by people who know their neighbours. Survivors need to know where to go, neighbours need to know how to respond without putting themselves at risk, and local services need to hear what the community is telling them.
